April and May Expeditions

That’s two walks under our belt and reported here for the intrepid Largs Probus Club Ramblers (or should that be ’amblers’)

To Fairlie
Our April excursion certainly didn’t require any crampons, safety ropes and the like, as we barely ventured more than 20-feet above sea level.

But a very pleasant briskish stroll took us from Aubrey Pond to Fairlie, to be rewarded with a pie and a pint at the Village Inn.

Well, to be accurate, two cullen skinks, one soup, and one aforementioned pie. And very good they were too.

Suitably refreshed, two of the party retraced their steps, whilst the other pair required the services of the 585 bus  –  not I hasten to add from any inability to walk, just the constraints of time.

The Kelburn Park
May’s adventure was made of sterner stuff. Again we were a party of four (should have been five, but we won’t go into that….). Plus of course, Poppy the dog.

Setting off from Largs Yacht Haven (Scotland’s finest), we walked the anchor parade along to the entrance to Kelburn Park, up the drive, declining the request to pay an optional £2 each, and headed off to begin our ascent of the estate (Still without the crampons and safety equipment).

Some doubts about the ability of our leader to plot an accurate course arose surprisingly quickly, though with the support of Mr. Google, these doubts were duly quashed (ha!) and we slogged our way up to the giddy heights of 600-ft or thereabouts.

Further rancour ensued as we gazed over the sparkling waters of the Clyde, with some confusion as to what constituted a yawl or a ketch. (I think we were basically correct!) But on the whole the to and fro chat flowed amicably and we enjoyed each other’s company.

From the summit of the estate, we wound our way down sinuous trails, to arrive at our destination, the Stables Cafe, and we would wholeheartedly recommend both their crispy bacon and just slightly cremated links sausage rolls.

These walks are of course just for fun and enjoyment, but there is a serious side…

Our next excursion will be to the Greenock Cut, probably on June 11th, but this will be confirmed.

Why not join us at our next meeting?

New members are always welcomed at the Club. If you are 50 or over, retired, or nearing retirement, (men only, I’m afraid, sorry ladies) you can attend three meetings as a guest and find out what a relaxed and friendly time we have.  That’s plenty of time to decide whether to become a Club member or not. Please check out our programme and fill in our Contact Form if you wish to attend as a guest, or to enquire about joining.

Largs Probus Club will next meet in the Willowbank Hotel on Wednesday 27th May at 10am when Shelagh McLachlan will give a talk on the Alloway Railway Tunnel.
