The Probus Club had an interesting talk recently from member, Norrie Hollywood about a business visit to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, a few years after the Falklands war.

His photos of the city were fascinating; there seemed to be so much space.

He showed us a picture of the broadest road known at the time – with its 16 lanes.

Plus a picture of a bridge to rival the Squinty Bridge in Glasgow.

Many aspects of the city are directly attributed to Eva Peron such as pictures of her integrated into buildings.

She was a tremendous speaker and addressed enormous crowds.

Norrie also included illustrations of life in the city such as Asado steak houses with their outside BBQs; this is a unique grilling method used to cook Argentinian barbeque.

He also saw lessons on the Argentinian Tango being given at restaurants.

He also included elements of conversations on the Argentine view of the Falklands (Malvinas) conflict. This is `a small section of the war memorial.

Webmaster’s note: The standard version of the conflict is, for example, in Wikipedia, whereas War History Online gives an alternative take on the war. Both make interesting reading.
Why not join us at our next meeting?
New members are always welcomed at the Club. If you are 50 or over, retired, or nearing retirement, (men only, I’m afraid, sorry ladies) you can attend three meetings as a guest and find out what a relaxed and friendly time we have. That’s plenty of time to decide whether to become a Club member or not. Please check out our programme and fill in our Contact Form if you wish to attend as a guest, or to enquire about joining.
Largs Probus Club will next meet in the Willowbank Hotel on Wednesday 4th March at 10am when Sandy McWhirter will give a talk on Bletchley Park.
