Last Wednesday, 18th June, 16 members of the club took the 09.45am ferry over to Great Cumbrae and then the bus to Millport for our annual Putting Competition at Millport Bowling Club. We all made the ferry, except one, a new member who assumed, not unsurprisingly, that putting would take place at Millport Golf Club. He eventually rang the club and they panicked as they did’t have us in the diary! CM eventually arrived, in time for a solo morning round.
We received the usual warm welcome from Christine who provided tea, coffee and biscuits. After a good blether we went out for the first round of the competition. and soon the sounds of cheers for a hole-in-one rang round the course. Another seven holes-in-one were made, giving eight in total. The player with the lowest morning round started eight two’s in a row, but no holes-in-one.

We then had a break for lunch: excellent lentil soup, of which we were forced to have second helpings 😃. This was followed by a sliced sausage roll and a drink from the bar.

With everyone refreshed, the second round began and another eight holes-in-one were recorded. The competition was very competitive and played in good spirit. Once again the weather was kind to us, contributing to a very enjoyable day. Allan Little thanked everyone for participating and also thanked Millport Bowling Club for keeping us fed and watered. We then ambled back down the hill for the journey home.

The results were as follows:
Third place: Bernie Rafferty – 82 with 2 holes-in-one
Second place: Phil Theaker – 81 with no holes-in-one
First place: Frank Scott – 78 – 2 holes-in-one

President Ray Young, winner Frank Scott and organiser Allan Little
CM won the Booby prize – a donut – his second round was a great improvement on his first, so well done! So it must have been nerves!
We would love to have more participants for next year’s Millport Masters, a great overseas day out. Our next competition will be at the Vikingar course in late August. Refreshments will be available: Rolls on sausage, bacon or tattie scone, plus tea and coffee.
Why not join us at our next meeting?
New members are always welcomed at the Club. If you are 50 or over, retired, or nearing retirement (men only, I’m afraid, sorry ladies), you can attend three meetings as a guest and find out what a relaxed and friendly time we have. That’s plenty of time to decide whether to become a Club member or not. Please check out our programme and email info@largsprobus.org.uk if you wish to attend as a guest, or to enquire about joining.
Largs Probus Club will next meet in the Willowbank Hotel on Wednesday 9th July at 10am when Andy Shand will introduce us to some Stories behind Stamps.
